Being a Community Care Worker
Community Care Worker (CCW) duties and key responsibilities –
You will need to have a full licence and be a car owner/driver. You will need to be very flexible and be available to start your working day from 7am daily, be available some evenings and alternate weekends. You must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal and of course be very reliable.
The role of a Community Care worker is a very sociable one as you are visiting mainly older people in their own homes supporting and encouraging independence.
Duties include – All aspects of personal care, including: washing, dressing, bathing, showering, assisting with continence management, emptying commodes, oral hygiene, etc. Other duties will include: bed making, shopping, medication prompting, light housework, laundry, meal preparation, social visits etc.
Each service user has their own individual care plan in their home which sets out the care required specifically for that service user. Included in the care plan will be a risk assessment to ensure health & safety for both service user and care worker, a manual handling plan, medication chart, service user profile and a general description of the care required to achieve an agreed outcome for the benefit of the service user.
Visits to service users are timed structured visits and maybe for 1/4hr, 1/2hr, 3/4hr and an hour plus. Generally CCW’s are paid for the length of time spent with each service user, although this can vary depending on which area of the country you maybe working.
An enhanced CRB/POVA check is carried out on ALL who work with vulnerable people. There is a fee for the CRB check and some care providers expect the candidate to pay for this fee on successful application and interview. The CRB process is lengthy and can take 4-8+ weeks to come back. It is only at that time will you be permitted to work alone in the community. Prior to this you may commence induction training which includes in house branch training covering all mandatory training. You will also ‘shadow’ train in the community with experienced care workers until you feel confident and competent with all aspects of the role.
You will also receive on-going training and support throughout your career and will be encouraged to undertake NVQ qualifications in health & social care to develop and enhance your knowledge and prospects. As a CCW you will receive regular one to one supervision meetings with your line manager to ensure you are fully trained, supported, and are happy in your role. You will also have an annual appraisal based on performance, training, support and career prospects etc. And as you work as part of a team you will be invited to regular team meetings with other colleagues.
